History: Six years ago Dave Plymouth opened Vacation Bicycle Rentals, a small company providing visitors to Redding with bicycles to explore the scenic Sacramento River Trail. To attract customers he assembled a fleet of bicycles, tricycles, 4-wheeled cycles, and gas or electric powered cycles. After only a few months he observed the special interest of senior citizens and physically challenged individuals. Then when a physical therapist asked if he would present a demonstration at the local Opportunity Center and Sports Camp, Dave relates that his experience of fitting cycles for physically challenged youth "forever changed my life".

So in 1997 he named his business Abilities First Cycle Shop to reflect his newfound joy in supporting his clients abilities over their disabilities.

When asked about his philosophy, Dave says, "My firm belief is that anyone who wants to ride should be given that chance. If with modern technology man has the ability to walk on the moon, then surely he can provide the physically challenged the opportunity to ride a bike or trike here on Earth."

Testimonial:

Dear Dave,

I'm sorry it's taken me so long to send the pictures of Chris and his new wheels.

Christmas was magical this year, thanks to you. Chris was so surprised when he got up Christmas morning, he couldn't wait to go outside and ride it around. Even without his socks and shoes on. The weather hasn't been great since the holidays but every sunny day Chris is outside riding his bike. Chris and I have taken long bike rides. He has even been riding around the block with his brother.

I can't thank you enough for everything that you have done for Chris; I believe that you really are the true Santa Claus. Thanks for giving Chris the freedom and independence to get around again.

Love,

Pam, Rick& Chris Hayes
